Genealogists Rosemarie and Günter Kaisers discovered references to the Molz Mill going back to the late 14th century, when it was called the Oetheser Mill.

In 1627, during the Thirty Years' War, Arnold Molz leased the mill from Hermann Hülsen. The name Molz has survived to this day. The edge mill which can still be seen at the mill also dates from that time. According to relevant investigations, this appears to be the oldest edge mill in the Rhine region. From 1691 onwards, the mill belonged to the Wegberg Order of the Holy Cross for a good 100 years. During the secularisation in Napoleon's times, the mill fell into private hands again.

The reason why this mill never became one of the major mills is likely to be its situation. It was not due to a lack of water. The mill was granted a dairy licence in the mid-1920s, which evolved into today's hospitality business. The mill business closed in 1930. In the early 1980s, the new mill owner Ernst Kreuder completely gutted the building and restored it. Together with Brigitte Hoyer, he converted the mill premises into a restaurant and also turned the upper wing of the mill building into a hotel. These days, the mill and its new water wheel are no longer fed by the Schwalm river but by the Mühlenbach, the mill brook, instead. Due to its situation, the Molz Mill is one of the most beautiful mills in the Schwalmtal valley.
